The Story of This Blanket
The River Blanket is drawn from an original woven work by Musqueam weaver Debra Sparrow. Its name honours the Fraser River, which has shaped the lives of the Musqueam people for countless generations.
Flowing from the interior of British Columbia to the Salish Sea, the river has long been a place of movement, gathering and connection and is often referred to as the “highway of the Salish.” For the Musqueam people, the river was—and continues to be—an important pathway for travel and connection, with canoes providing a vital means of navigating the river and reaching neighbouring communities. It continues to sustain the land and the community that has lived alongside it since time immemorial.
The motifs, patterns and colours are drawn from Salish weaving traditions, reflecting a visual language carried forward through generations.
The Making
Originally woven by hand from hand-spun and hand-dyed wool, the design has been thoughtfully translated into an heirloom-quality blanket woven from 100% natural cotton. Every detail honours the integrity of the original work while remaining true to the story from which it began.
